As I stood perched on a rock overlooking Vernazza, I paused to not only admire the sheer beauty of where I was but to look beyond at the horizon. I thought, "this is epic!" My mind was racing like the elegant horses at the Kentucky Derby. I was in awe of where I was standing and where I was headed next. One thing was certain. I was hiking along the trail that runs between Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza. Wow...just wow... If I wasn't with my friends Nick, Mike and Bobby, I'm not sure that I would have found this spot. We nearly walked right past this rock. We all sort of hesitated as we thought of how one false step could send us plummeting to our deaths. Nick being scared out of his mind of heights didn't climb out. Mike and I were not going to pass up this opportunity. We climbed carefully out, one step in front of the other, one at a time. The others were bracing themselves to come to the rescue if either of us slipped. My heart was pumping faster than it did when I sprinted around the track running the 400m dash in high school. In my head I kept telling myself, "just don't look down!" I was standing on a rock jutting out 100s of meters from the sea in one of the most beautiful places in the world. As I looked beyond the little fishing village at the horizon my heart calmed, my breathing steadied, and I began to think. Where had I been? Where was I going? Just a week earlier I was making friends over a pint of Crean's in Dingle, Ireland betting on the horse race. Now here I stand overlooking the vast Ligurian Sea on the Italian Riviera. My Epic Path was whatever path I wished to forge. From the little pub in Ireland betting on horses with the locals to the captivating hike of the Cinque Terre... At that moment I realized my Epic Path had just begun. Where will your next Epic be?
